Electronics Manufacturing Needs for CNC Machining

Electronic and electrical equipment uses machined components at every level — from the tiny connector pins and contact bodies inside a connector housing to the large aluminum enclosures that protect circuit boards and power electronics. These components share a common requirement: dimensional precision that ensures consistent assembly, reliable electrical contact, and proper mechanical retention.

Swiss CNC machining is particularly well-suited for the connector and contact component family — small-diameter turned parts with complex features that must be produced in large quantities with tight dimensional consistency. Our bar-fed turning and milling capability covers the enclosure and housing family — precision milled aluminum and stainless enclosures with machined mounting features, cutouts, and connector ports.

Materials for Electronic and Electrical Machined Components

Material selection in electronics machining is driven by conductivity, weight, thermal performance, and non-magnetic requirements:

  • Aluminum (6061, 7075) — lightweight enclosures, heat sinks, and structural brackets; excellent thermal conductivity
  • Copper (101, 110) — highest electrical conductivity for bus bars, contacts, and current-carrying components
  • Brass (360) — good conductivity with better machinability than copper for contact pins and connector bodies
  • Stainless (304, 316) — non-magnetic stainless for components near sensitive electronics
  • Delrin (Acetal) — electrically insulating plastic for electrical isolation bushings and standoffs
  • PEEK — high-temperature insulating plastic for applications near heat-generating components

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can RPM produce non-magnetic stainless components for MRI or sensitive electronics applications?

A: Yes. 304 and 316 stainless steel are austenitic and non-magnetic in the annealed condition — making them appropriate for applications requiring non-magnetic metallic components. For highly sensitive applications, we can source certified low-permeability 316L stainless.

Q: Can RPM machine high-conductivity copper for electrical components?

A: Yes. We machine copper 101 (oxygen-free, highest conductivity) and 110 (electrolytic tough pitch) for current-carrying components including bus bars, contact clips, and machined electrical connections. Copper machining requires sharp tooling and specific cutting parameters to avoid work hardening.

Q: What surface finish does RPM achieve on aluminum enclosure mating flanges?

A: We achieve Ra 32–63 microinch as-machined on aluminum flanges. For EMI gasketed joints, Ra 63 or better is typically specified — well within our standard machining capability. Tighter surface finish is available with appropriate tooling selection.

Q: Can RPM anodize aluminum electronic enclosures after machining?

A: Yes. Through our outside coating services, we coordinate Type II anodize (decorative/protective) and Type III hard coat anodize for aluminum electronic enclosures. Color options include clear, black, and custom colors. We manage the complete machining and coating process from a single purchase order.
