Choosing the right plastics for machining starts with knowing how each resin behaves under a cutting tool. At Resolute Precision Manufacturing, we turn a wide range of machinable plastic stock into precision components on our CNC lathes and Swiss machines, with a focus on medium to high volume production and consistent quality.
Whether you need a tight-tolerance Delrin bushing or a nylon fitting, our team helps you select the best plastic for CNC work based on strength, wear resistance, chemical exposure, and cost. Our CNC machining plastic materials include ABS, acrylic, Delrin, HDPE, nylon, and PVC.
CNC Machining Plastic Materials for Precision Parts
Plastic gives engineers advantages that metal cannot match. It is lightweight, naturally corrosion resistant, electrically insulating and often quieter and lower in friction than metal in moving assemblies. Using the right plastics for machining, you can replace heavier or costlier metal parts without giving up the performance your application demands.
At Resolute Precision Manufacturing, plastic material machining is part of our everyday production. We machine bushings, fittings, inserts, shafts, flanges, nuts, and other custom components from solid plastic bar stock, from first prototypes through ongoing production runs.
Choosing the Right Machinable Plastic
A good machinable plastic cuts cleanly, holds its dimensions, and leaves a smooth finish with minimal burring. The right choice depends on load, temperature, chemical contact, appearance, and budget. Here are the plastic materials we machine most often:
- Delrin (Acetal): A favorite CNC plastic material for precision parts. It offers high stiffness, low friction, excellent dimensional stability, and very good machinability. Common for gears, bushings, and wear components.
- Nylon: Tough, wear resistant, and good at absorbing impact. Nylon is widely used for bearings, spacers, and insulators. It can absorb moisture, so we account for this when machining to tight tolerances.
- ABS: A strong, impact-resistant plastic that machines easily and is cost effective. A good fit for housings, prototypes, and general-purpose components.
- Acrylic: Rigid and optically clear, with a polished appearance. Acrylic suits lenses, light guides, covers, and display components. It requires careful tooling and feeds to avoid chipping and stress cracking.
- HDPE: Lightweight, moisture resistant, and chemically resistant, with a low coefficient of friction. HDPE is common in fluid handling, food-contact, and wear applications.
- PVC: Rigid, flame retardant, and highly resistant to corrosion and many chemicals. PVC is often used for fittings, fluid components, and electrical insulation.
Not sure which one fits? Send us your drawing and operating conditions and we will recommend the best plastic for CNC machining your part.
